Figure 14 shows a portionof a furniture store on the second floor ofa two-story brick building erected in 1888which illustrates the preference of termitesfor particular pieces of wood. Penetrate Redwood Floor The floor was covered by a thick woolcarpet with a heavy felt mat beneath it. Thefloor was of Douglas fir resting on a red-wood underfloor, and this in turn on Doug-las fir joists. Termite pellets were first no-ticed underneath an antique birch cabinet.Each time the cabinet was moved to sweepthe carpet, there would be a new pile ofpellets, and upon close examination holeswere seen through the wool carpet andsmall holes penetrating the \x4 Douglasfir flooring. Upon removing the carpet andlx4 finish flooring, holes were observedpenetrating the redwood subfloor.
