Der Ursprung dieser riesigen Zitadelle entlang der Seidenstraße geht zurück auf das Achämenidenreich (vom 6. bis 4. Jahrhundert vor Christus) oder sogar früher. Die Zitadelle wurde durch das verheerende Bam-Erdbeben 2003 zerstört. Dieses Erdbeben kostete rund 26 000 Menschen das Leben. Eine Rekonstruktion der Anlage wird derzeit durchgeführt.
